Amused

Amused

Amused has been written by young, fresh and first time writers and it offers an array of stories with a twist in the tail. The stories will make you smile, laugh, cry and keep you amused.

While Sandhya writes about the Jogan family that follows the IST in the USA,  'The Encounter' by Srinath has a lot to say about the life and the transformations that one goes through and all that is brought out through a conversation between a grandfather and a grandson. Krishna's 'The Winter Birds' with an unusual narration is a very exciting romantic story. Ravikiran's 'Shakespeare's curse' is about the protagonist's encounter with Shakespeare...
Achal Rangaswamy's 'Hero Meets Hero' is about a day in the life of a pickpocket, Kshitij Banker's story will remind you of a stranger you know  well, Usha and Sriya's stories have everyday humour that we miss to observe.

A sure decoction to leave you Amused!

Beyond the Uncharted Landscape

Beyond the Uncharted Landscape

This book has been written Achal Rangaswamy and M. S Srinivasan.

It is a practical, "hands - on" guide for students, corporate aspirants and young men and women who have just begun working. The book takes the reader through a conversational journey of self-realisation and self actualisation. Written by a senior corporate who has over 3 decades of experience himself, the friendly and simple book sticks to contemporary language and puts the reader at ease.

Yet, each chapter provides a profound lesson in terms of learning joyfully, working with responsibility, and having a great attitude of gratitude. Achal Rangaswamy constantly talks of "stress- free happiness" and "taking the road of one's choice".

The book is anecdotal as well as prescriptive, but is not one of those self-help books that leave you wondering what to do next. In fact, at the end of each chapter, the author leaves the reader with a question or two to anwer, even take notes and then keep looking at those notes so that they can serve as stepping stones on the way to success not only at work, but also as an individual who is always on the grow.

Laced with spirituality, which is neither boring, nor in-your-face kind of instructional matter, the book continuously highlights the need to stay grounded, learn at a measured pace rather than feel frantic, and look at succeeding without knocking down everybody else in sight.

Based on the author's two decades long interaction with students from Biz Schools and engineering colleges, many issues like choice of streams, choice of functions at work, dealing with day to day crises at the workplace, and issues in man management are discussed with many anecdotes to tellingly give the reader options to look at.

There is even a chapter on goal setting and monitoring, which is literally a hand-held, Do It Yourself guide, which helps the reader plan various goals, professional, personal, social and of higher orders as well. Put simply, it is a practical, do-able and most user-friendly guide to success in personal and corporate life.

About the book

'The Wonder that is Sanskrit' is a book that goes into the depths of a precious language like Sanskrit and is by no means a tedious read. It is a book for beginners, for anyone who is interested and curious to gain more insights into the language and even for a Sanskrit scholar who would like to once again step into the world of this sacred language.

The book delves into the grammar and linguistics of the Sanskrit language. If one has studied and understood the linguistics of the English language, the gutturals, the dentals and the labio-dentals, very well, then it would be easier for one to comprehend the grammar of Sanskrit as well. A detailed explanation is given on the division of Vowels and Consonants according to the pronunciation /sound of the letters, whether the breath is held back (aspirate) or thrown out (non-aspirate) when the letter is uttered.

Akin to the English language, in which there are palindromes and anagrams, even in Sanskrit, there are examples of verses, where each line is a palindrome. There are examples of slokas where the consonants come in their natural order, some in which only 2-3 slokas are used and some slokas in which the letters form geometric patterns. This book also transports us to the days of the Ramayana and Mahabharata and slokas have been drawn from the same to narrate some parts of the story. This makes the read all the more interesting.

As we read further, we come to know how some discoveries in the field of Mathematics and Science are related to Sanskrit. Even in Literature, after Greek drama and Renaissance drama, Sanskrit plays are considered to be very important in the history of World drama. There are excerpts drawn from various poems like Kumarasambhava, Meghadutam and others in the book. These are considered to be milestones in the history of World Literature. There have been some extra-ordinary texts written in Sanskrit on subjects like medicine and architecture too. To show Sanskrit as a sacred and spiritual language, the authors have written about how the language has played a major role in Upanisads and the Gita. Some verses from both the texts have been mentioned.

Since examples have been drawn from almost all contexts and under all topics, and includes discussions towards the end on whether Sanskrit is a Hindu language and on the myth about Sanskrit being considered as a dead language. This style of writing makes the book a really interesting read.
